Spain
is contributing about US$700 million to establish the United Nations
Fund for the Achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. The
fund will be managed by Spain and UNDP, which coordinates UN development
activities in developing countries.
“UNDP thanks
the Government of Spain for this contribution which confirms its
leadership in multilateralism and international cooperation and
highlights its confidence in the United Nations. While UNDP will
manage this fund, Spain’s contribution will bolster the entire
UN system by strengthening the reform process,” Dervis said.
“Focussing on seven key development areas, widely acknowledged
as central to the achievement of the MDGs, this contribution will
better position the UN to help countries achieve their national
development objectives.”

Annan in his last speech before stepping down as Secretary General
asked governments to live up to their promise to end extreme poverty
and achieve the Millennium Development Goals by 2015.
The
arrival of Ms. Louise Arbour in Kathmandu, Nepal
United
Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Louise Arbour has arrived
in Kathmandu on 19th January 2007 on a six days visit. She met Rt.
Hon'ble Girija Prasad Koirala, Prime Minister of Nepal and discussed
with him on matters relating to present human rights situation of
Nepal. It is learn that Mr. Koirala explained her how the Government
of Nepal will play role to strengthen human rights in Nepal and
solve problems arising out of violation of human rights.
Ms.
Arbour has started meeting with the leaders of different political
parties. She will meet Maoist Supremo Mr. Prachanda during her stay.
She has visited some district of the Western Development Region
of Nepal to study human rights situation.
As United Nations
Youth and Student Association, Nepal is deeply committed to promoting
respect for human rights in Nepal. It is natural for it to extend
warm welcome to Ms. Louise Arbour, the United Nations High Commissioner
for Human Rights.

STUDENT REPRESENTS PALAU AT YOUTH SUMMIT
Ms. Ilanna Seid represented
the Republic of Palau at the recently concluded United Nations Global
Youth Summit. She joined young community leaders from 192 United
Nations member states who gathered at New York from 29 to 31 October.
The purpose of the summit was to get the world’s best and
brightest young minds to commit themselves to helping their countries
in achieving the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)
by 2015. The world’s young leaders were welcomed by the UN
Secretary-General Kofi Annan. President Abdoulaye Wade of Senegal
and high-level representatives from Austria, Bahrain, Brazil, Japan,
and Morocco.
The summit provided a wonderful networking opportunity for the young
people of the world to interact with UN agency heads, as well as
representatives of the public and private sectors, to work together
towards fostering peace, and improving health, education and development
throughout the world, issues that are outlined by UN’s MGDs
initiative. His Excellency, Ambassador Stuart Beck stated: “During
the summit, Ms. Seid proved herself to be a very capable and gifted
young woman who represented Palau with pride. We are all proud of
her and I am confident that with her tireless work ethic, talent
and positive attitude, Ilana will contribute greatly to the future
development of the Republic.”
Ms. Ilana Seid is a senior at Stanford University majoring in Law
and Economics. She will be graduating this coming June 2007. Earlier
this year, Ms. Seid also became a recipient of a full scholarship
from the National Scholarship Board for her outstanding academic
performance. The Global Summit was organized by the UN Office of
Sport for Development and Peace (UNOSDP) on behalf of the entire
UN System. The summit in collaboration with the United Nations was
sponsored the Gita-Mohan Mittal Foundation/Vishwa Prawasi Bhartiya
Leaders Forum, the Inner Trip Reyukai International Foundation and
the Sun Microsystem’s co-founder John Gage.
On
the eve of Children's Day, 80 children and representatives from
schools and NGOs met to deliberate on this question in New Delhi.
The group comprised of activists of the "Nine Is Mine"
campaign - an initiative of children, schools, communities and organizations
across 15 states of India to ensure that the government commits
9% of the GDP to public expenditure on Health & Education, as
promised in the National Common Minimum Program.

Anti-Drug and AIDS Association Nepal and Russian Culture Centre
had jointly organized a talk programme on "The Role of Youth
in Eradicating HIV/AIDS" in Cooperation with United Nations
Youth and Student Association Nepal. Mr. Vijay Singha, Assistant
Resident Representative of UNDP based in Nepal was the chief guest
on the occasion. The speakers at the programme were

The entire
speaker highlighted the importance of eradicating HIV/AIDS through
raising public awareness against it. Youth are the main fighter
against HIV/AIDS which stand as a hurdle on the way of the Youth.
The entire speaker focused laid importance on promoting youth empowerment
for the eradication of HIV/AIDS.
United Nations
Youth and Student Association Nepal played very important role in
successfully organizing this talk programme.
